πΏ Red Curculigo (Curculigo orchioides)
A Precious Herbal Remedy from the Mountains of Vietnam
π What is Red Curculigo?
Red Curculigo, scientifically known as Curculigo orchioides Gaertn, belongs to the Amaryllidaceae (lily) family. In Vietnam, itβs also called βTien Maoβ or βNgai Cauβ, and its name βSΓ’m Cauβ (Ginseng-Betel) comes from its tonic-like properties and leaves that resemble those of the betel plant (cau).
The plant grows to a height of 35β40 cm, with long narrow leaves (about 15 cm), red tuberous roots, and yellow flowers. It is commonly found in the highland provinces of Northern Vietnam, such as Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Hoa Binh, and Quang Namβoften in grass hills near forest edges.
π΄ Red vs. Black Curculigo
There are two types:
-
Red Curculigo: Lower in toxins, mild and pleasant when infused in alcohol.
-
Black Curculigo: More potent but contains higher toxicity and may cause skin irritation, so it’s not recommended for alcohol infusions.
For this reason, Red Curculigo is preferred for traditional wine infusions.
